A little sneak peak into my world
Just so you know:
My faith is centered on Jesus. I grew up super conservative and had a faith crisis in collage. I basically hated all things religious and did my best to leave faith entirely. But as much as I disliked Church and Christians I couldn’t shake Jesus. He held on tight to me and through hilarious and mind blowing events I found myself on staff at an amazing church. A church that really likes Jesus, that fights to keep religion at bay but relationships close. Over the years I’ve grown into different roles and today I have the joy of leading one of our multisite locations and speaking occasionally from our broadcast campus. I honestly couldn’t care less for most traditions and piety but deeply love Jesus, his message, his grace and the very real ways he’s changed me and I’ve seen him change the world around me.
My fitness journey is wack. Growing up I was so fat I was known as “fatty Matty,” which left me with more then just a few insecurities and doubts. I stumbled into cross county in high school, chasing after a girl, I mean that quite literally. And for 4 years loved training and running with that team. I was able to make varsity and run in one state championship race. But overall I was never athletic just stubborn and out to prove I was no longer “fatty Matty.” The dreaded “College 15” came with a vengeance and my weight shot up, as my actively basically stopped. I putzed at a few intramural sports, a few short stints to the gym but basically just grew up and grew big again. I peaked around 270 pounds a few years into my career. Haunted by the trajectory I was own I dropped down to 195, but over the next few years drifted back to 265. While crawling up in weight I managed to nurse along a scared back from a middle school back injury, and blew out my left knee in a pick up game of basketball. With a new ACL and a renewed awareness of what approaching 40 does to a body I begin crawling towards a healthier life style. I tackled a bucket list dream in 2017 of cycling a century (100 miles), which lite a fuse for more. In 2018 that fuse lead to a 3 day 280 mile bike trip, a half marathon (2:22:00) and a full marathon (5:20:00). But even with the increased activity levels my weight continued to gain through out 2018 and I started 2019 at a disheartening 262 pounds. 2019 has been a journey of raining in my eating habits, developing a gym habit and growing more in control my of life and diet. I’m learning how to train stronger and wiser and seen that pay off a great 3 day bike trip, crushing 334 miles. All along dreams continue to grow about what might be next and I hope you’ll journey with me towards them on this blog.
My family is the bedrock of my life. I married my collage sweetheart, a Yooper from the upper peninsula of Michigan and we just celebrated 14 years married. We seriously love each other, but that doesn’t mean we’ve got a bed of roses to lay on. We each bring our own drama and pain but what I love about us is that these hurts and pains don’t drive us a part but drive us to work towards each other. We have two boys. Zion who’s 7 and Indie who’s 5. Watching them becoming fully them is one of the best parts of our week.
Thanks for checking out the blog and I hope this journey is one we all grown from. Thanks for following along.
Matt
